Message Better to remove the engine for a proper and thorough job? yes. I've removed stock turbos and installed Sport 500's with the motor in, and lack of room for removing and replacing the turbo/manifold bolts was the biggest hinderance. As mentioned above, you can't get proper torque specs on these bolts with the engine in the car. Also, it's much easier to install water and oil lines outside of the car as well.

Just don't believe the fiction printed in the FSM about turbo removal. :/
